The EBCI assembled 122 acres that abut Smokies Stadium. The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians will enter into a $13.5 million contract to purchase 197.62 acres of land along Interstate 40 in Tennessee following a unanimous vote from Tribal Council July 11. The property is located south of I-40 just east of the Exit 407 interchange and borders I-40 for about a mile. On the other side of the highway lies another piece of property recently purchased by the tribe. The property is directly behind the Tennessee Smokies Minor League Baseball stadium. It’s adjacent to a retail center that includes a Bass Pro Shop. It’s also in an area zoned for commercial development. “The land is an outstanding commercial property that can be developed in other ways,” the chief said. Tribal Council voted in February to buy the 122-acre tract for $7.5 million. Sevierville Public Information Officer Bob Stahlke said the city has talked to the Cherokee, but hasn’t discussed specific development plans – yet, anyway.
